Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt Movie Cancelled

As you may or may not know, I've been following Anne Rice's work since she became a Christian and began writing a trilogy on the life of Christ. Her first book, "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt" is about His childhood, starting from when he lived in Egypt after fleeing Herod to His family's move back to Israel. This book has been slated to become a movie, scheduled to release next year, but the latest news is that the movie plans have now been cancelled.

The film project for Anne Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt has been cancelled, Christianity Today Movies has learned.

The movie had been the most visible venture for Good News Holdings, a Christian entertainment company co-founded by George Barna in 2005.

Rice, author of Interview with a Vampire and other occult novels before converting to Christianity several years ago, told CT Movies that "we decided not to move forward" with the film or with Good News Holdings. She would not elaborate on the reasons.

GNH president and CEO Christopher Chisholm told CT Moves that "several things came up about Christ the Lord," including "creative differences" involving the "budget, director and talent." Chisholm said, "We had an amicable parting of ways, and we decided to release all our rights to Christ the Lord."

Chisholm added that "some people were worried that we were leading with a movie that was based on the Apocrypha." Rice's novel, the first of a series she is writing about Christ, focuses on Jesus at the age of 7, drawing from the Apocrypha and other noncanonical sources. The second book in the series, The Road to Cana, will be published in the spring of 2008.

"The rights to both books are available," Rice told CT Movies. "I hope some day we will see films based on these books. I'm in no rush, however, as I am at work on a third book in the series. But there is no more I can say about the situation with Good News Holdings."

Nimoy started filming for Star Trek IX

Nimoy To Begin Trek Shooting

Original Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy, who will reprise the role of Spock in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek film, told fans at a convention in Las Vegas that he will begin shooting his scenes in December and will do more in February and March of next year, StarTrek.com reported.

Nimoy's role as the older Spock is "not gigantic," but "it's more than a cameo," Nimoy said on Aug. 12. Heroes star Zachary Quinto will play Spock as a young man.

At the same convention, William Shatner, who played Capt. Kirk, appeared onstage with Nimoy and ribbed his co-star because Shatner apparently won't be in the new movie, the site reported.

Abrams' Star Trek, which reportedly deals with the first mission of a young Capt. James T. Kirk and Spock, will begin filming in November, the site reported.

African Penguins at the Aquarium of the Americas

When I attended the National Art Therapy Conference in New Orleans last November, I got the chance to go to the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas before I left. It was a great aquarium, especially in light of getting up and running after Hurricane Katrina. One of the exhibits that cracked me up the most were the African Black-footed Penguins, who hammed it up for the audience like nothing else there. I got some video segments and stills of them during their act, and put them together in a compilation video to share with you. I know it's a bit behind--only 10 months after I was there--but hey, better late than never, right? I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Director J.J. Abrams has found his Chekov for his upcoming Star Trek feature film: Russian born actor Anton Yelchin. Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto as Spock, and five other as-yet-uncast actors to play younger generation versions of the characters from the original television series. Little is known about the plot of the film, but it goes without saying that Paramount is hoping for a rebirth of its biggest franchise with this high-profile feature film.
